The name of William Warre appears for the first time associated with the port wine trade, with the creation in 1729 of Messrs Clark, Thorn & Warre, benefiting from a long tradition of history of families linked to the production of Port wine since 1670. The the entry of the young Warre, who had served as a military man under the orders of the Duke of Wellington in the war against the Napoleonic invasions in the Peninsula, was to play a decisive role in his relations in the recognition and growth of the brand that at the end of the 18th century Warre & Sounds represent 10% of total exports from Porto to 1791.
